On the last leg of their North American tour with Sunami, Bay Area’s Scowl brought massive energy to Toronto last weekend. Hosted at Annabel’s, the show was undoubtedly one of the best hardcore concerts of the year. Thanks to the venue being barrier-free, punks of all ages were stage-diving in waves, bodies on top of bodies surfing the tightly packed room consistently through the night.
Typical to Scowl shows, there was laughing and singing, dancing and two-stepping until everyone’s legs went numb. Kat Moss’ energy bounced off the walls as she shared the microphone and stage with fans, putting on an unforgettably engaging performance. The band played a balanced mix of older fan-favourites, like the beloved Fuck Around (which people lost control to!), and new tracks off their most recent album, like Not Hell, Not Heaven (my personal fav)!

At the heart of hardcore is community. A space to share emotions like rage and joy, a space to feel seen and heard. Any hardcore show should be a party, and Scowl has cultivated this space, delivered an incredible performance and, as usual, surpassed expectations. This is my fourth time seeing this band live and it will certainly not be the last. It has been my pleasure to see this band grow rapidly throughout the last few years, and I encourage everyone to get out and dance with Scowl!
